We did it!

Nov. 9, 2011 in News Articles

We celebrated victory last night! I’m so excited to announce that I will be serving the newly-formed District C on the Houston City Council. Thanks to you for your words of encouragement, volunteer hours, financial contributions, house parties, and of course, your VOTES!

We couldn’t have done it without you. We faced a crowded slate, a new district, and a year full of frustrated voters. We worked hard and are now ready to focus our energies on preparing to serve you.

We ran a positive race, a respectful race, a race of which I can be proud.

Thank you again for your friendship and support. And while this may be a bit early, permit me to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving–we all have so much for which to be thankful.

Sincerely,

Ellen

Editorial: Ellen Cohen for City Council District C

Oct. 7, 2011The Houston Chronicle

Among a strong field of candidates for Houston City Council District C – the district that includes Montrose, Meyerland, Braeswood, Oak Forest, Southampton and parts of the Heights – Ellen Cohen’s track record separates her from the rest. Do you live in District C?

Sep. 28, 2011 in News Articles

I know it’s a lot to process.

As a voter, you are challenged to learn about issues and candidates, find out what races are run and when, and navigate polling hours and locations. This election year is made even more challenging because it follows the 2010 census, thus the legislature’s redrawing of Texas political districts — from congressional to Houston City Council.

Many Houstonians are unaware that two new city council seats have been added. Others may be aware of the change, but are not sure how it affects their district.

Find out if you live in District C.

For the past 5 months, I’ve been campaigning throughout District C, which includes Oak Forest, parts of the Heights, Washington/Memorial, Upper Kirby, Montrose, Braeswood, Southampton and Meyerland, among others. Each area has its unique attributes but concerns about police presence, infrastructure and fiscal responsibility are common to all.

Are you a District C Voter? Join Team Cohen!

Houston made some tough decisions when it passed this year’s budget. These systematic cuts resulted in reduced services and employee layoffs – and that affects us all. On Council, I’ll work to increase efficiencies and streamline programs as a solution to our financial challenges. Fiscal responsibility and smart investments in our communities will lead to an even better quality of life for all of us. The new District C has a bright future and I hope you’ll help me make it a reality by participating in Early Voting beginning October 24, or by casting your ballot on Election Day, November 8.

Sincerely,

Ellen

Yard Signs!

Aug. 17, 2011 in News Articles

Dear Friend,

On Monday, I became the first candidate for City Council to file the official paperwork with the Mayor’s Office to have my name placed on the November 8th ballot.  The previous day supporters enjoyed cake balls from Angie’s Cake as I hosted an open house at my new campaign headquarters.  Now that we are in full swing, let the yard sign distribution begin!

My policy is to only place signs on private property where we have been invited to do so. {Signs on construction site fences, vacant lots, overpasses, and in medians are illegal.}  If you have displayed a yard sign in the past, you can expect to hear from us to confirm that you would like to show your support once again.  If you would like to sign up for a yard sign now, you can do that here or by calling our office at 713.838.0134.

Some homeowners’ associations may try to prevent their residents from displaying yard signs.  However, Texas law forbids homeowners’ associations from enforcing or adopting restrictive covenants that prohibit property owners from displaying political signs on the property owners’ property during the period from 90 days before an election until 10 days after the election is over.

Again, thank you in advance for your continued support and enthusiasm.

Fondly,

Cohen Officially Files for Houston City Council, District C

Aug. 8, 2011 in News Articles

(Houston) – Ellen Cohen filed the official paper work with the Mayor’s office this morning for Houston City Council District C. Today marks the first day that candidates can file their application for a place on the November 8th ballot.  Cohen, accompanied by her treasurer Jackie Martin, was the first candidate to file at City Hall this morning.

“I feel confident about my race and our numbers look good,” said Cohen.  A recent poll shows Cohen with a solid 35 point lead and she was the leader across the board in every region of the district.  In the portion of the district that covers Cohen’s former legislative seat, she earns an impressive 59% of the vote.  “I am thrilled by the outpouring of support enforcing my strong commitment to serving the citizens of Houston and District C.  These numbers reflect the excitement and enthusiasm for my race.”

Cohen is well on her way to winning a majority in November and taking her place on Houston City Council.

Cohen previously served in the Texas Legislature as the State Representative for House District 134.  She was the President and CEO of the Houston Area Women’s Center (HAWC) for 18 years.  Prior to her role at HAWC, she was the Executive Director of the American Jewish Committee (AJC) for 10 years.
