Houston Observes Veterans’ Day

On Veterans’ Day, we celebrate, honor, and thank all those who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Over 250,000 veterans live and work in Houston, making it home to the 2nd largest population of military service members and their families in the nation.

On Monday, November 11th, the City of Houston will host the following festivities in Hermann Square at City Hall:

  • 10AM: Veterans’ Day Ceremony, including a 21 Gun Salute and keynote speech from Parade Marshal Joe Walsh of the Eagles
  • 11:00AM: Moment of Silence in memory of the 101st anniversary of the signing of the Armistice, which ended WWI
  • 11:30AM: American Heroes Parade (begins at the intersection of Dallas St and Bagby St)

In observance of the holiday, the District C office will be closed on Monday, November 11th.

Also, please note that there will be no solid waste pickup on Monday the 11th and collection schedules will be altered through Thursday, November 14th.

Memorial Park Golf Course Re-Opens

Mayor Turner, Mayor Pro Tem Cohen, Houston Astros owner Jim Crane, and many others cut the ribbon on the newly-renovated Memorial Park Golf Course on Monday, November 4th. The Astros Golf Foundation funded the $15M, 10-month project. New amenities include the upper-tier driving range with 42 bays on each level, as well as re-routed fairways, new plantings, a new irrigation system, and significant drainage improvements. The Memorial Park Golf Course is now the second PGA Tour-certified municipal-owned golf course in the nation, and will host the Houston Open in 2020.

Improvements for Memorial Dr.

An extensive pavement rehabilitation is underway for Memorial Drive, from Bagby St to Westcott St. The concrete panels along this stretch will be replaced, with a minimum of one lane of traffic always open throughout the project. Construction is expected to be complete in approximately six months, weather permitting.
