Heights Workforce Housing Application Moves Forward

Council passed a resolution in support of an application by developer Brinshore for affordable housing tax credits for a proposed workforce housing project, to be located at402 Columbia St in District C’s Heights community.

If awarded by the State, these tax credits will allow Brinshore to construct a high quality multi-family housing complex to allow Houstonian workers such as teachers, nurses, and police officers access to living in the Heights, which they likely would otherwise have been priced out from doing.

After meeting with local residents, the developer agreed to reduce the number of stories and units of the proposal to ensure the neighborhood’s infrastructure will accommodate the new construction. Brinshore also committed to removing street parking and including extensive landscaping and street trees in their plans.

Mayor Pro Tem Cohen strongly supports workforce housing in District C because she believes that Houstonians of all income levels deserve to access our fantastic neighborhoods, schools, and amenities.

The proposal will now compete state-wide for these 9% housing tax credits. The Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs will announce which, if any, of the Houston proposals will receive these tax credits in late July 2019.
