Voter Registration Deadline Approaching

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 9th is the LAST DAY to register to vote in the November election. Eligible voters must print, complete, and mail in a physical copy of a Voter Registration Application to the Harris County Tax-Assessor Collector and Voter Registrar’s office. Applications and instructions can be downloaded online and physical copies of the application are available at your local US Post Office, library, high school, Texas Department of Public Safety site, and other government offices.

Houston Recognizes Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Mayor Turner and Mayor Pro Tem Cohen proclaimed the month of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. They were joined at a press conference on Tuesday by District Attorney Kim Ogg, Police Chief Art Acevedo, Houston Area Women’s Center CEO Emily Whitehurst, and other elected officials. A 49-year breast cancer survivor, Mayor Pro Tem Cohen noted that there is a high correlation between women who die of breast cancer and women who have experienced domestic abuse, because their partners often do not let them seek critical screening and treatment. On October 15th, several organizations who work to end domestic violence, including AVDA, the Interfaith Advisory Council, and Daya, will host a multi-faith vigil for those who have lost their lives to domestic violence in 2018. The event will begin at 6:15pm on the steps of City Hall. Survivors in need of services, or those interested in joining the fight to end domestic violence, should contact the Houston Area Women’s Center and other area organizations.

National Night Out in District C

Team Cohen partnered with the Houston Police Department to visit neighborhoods throughout District C as part of National Night Out, an annual event that encourages crime prevention by calling on communities to gather and get to know their neighbors and the police that serve them. Millions of neighbors in the US participate in National Night Out events and District C is home to hundreds of local celebrations every year.
