This Week at City Hall

Aug. 8, 2014Office of Council Member Ellen Cohen

On the Agenda

Council amended Houston’s transportation ordinance to open the vehicle-for-hire market to new entrants, creating more transit choices for consumers. Transportation network companies such as Uber and Lyft connect drivers to riders in a “peer-to-peer” system via smartphone apps. The new regulations for these companies will go into effect in 90 days.

What’s Happening in the Annex

Council Member Cohen met with Director Carlecia Wright of the Houston Office of Business Opportunity and with representatives from the Vinson and Elkins law firm to discuss partnering to create a free “legal academy” for small businesses in our city. Through this program, Houstonian entrepreneurs will have access to free legal guidance on issues such as incorporating and tax implications. Director Wright and Vinson and Elkins are targeting 2015 for this initiative.

What’s Happening in the District

The Braeswood Place Homeowners’ Association will host a public meeting to discuss the effects of two drainage-related infrastructure projects recently completed in their area. The Harris County Flood Control District and the Houston Public Works and Engineering Department will discuss their respective projects and a portion of the meeting will be devoted to questions from residents.
