Janiece Longoria was first appointed as Port Commission Chairman in 2013 and she’s the first woman to hold that position.

The Port has seen record growth during Longoria’s tenure, but what happens now that oil prices are falling?

For one, Longoria forsees a slowdown in steel imports.

“Because a lot of that steel was used for petrochemical exploration and production.”

But Longoria says other industries could see a boost.

“The feed stock for the manufacture of petrochemical products is at an all-time low, or it’s at a lower price. And so we’ll see additional manufacturing capability along the Gulf Coast in the petrochemical industry.”

Longoria’s nomination was unanimously approved Monday during a joint meeting of the Houston City Council and the Harris County Commissioners Court.
