After a successful pilot project earlier this year, Mayor Annise Parker announces the return of SundayStreetsHTX for October, November and December in The Heights, Third Ward/Museum Park and East End/Fifth Ward areas. Designated streets in these neighborhoods will be open solely to pedestrians and bicyclists from noon – 4 p.m. on designated dates to encourage walking, running, dancing or riding with friends and family.
“SundayStreetsHTX is an opportunity for families and residents to get out and experience Houston in a new way,” said Mayor Parker. “The pilot project showed that residents desire the opportunity to become more active and engaged in their communities. It’s time Houston met that desire and made this a recurring event.”
Open Streets are multi-faceted programs that promote the use of public streets for recreation and physical activity by engaging participants in fun ways along designated routes. Since 2013, more than 90 cities across the nation have hosted Open Streets initiatives with activity hubs ranging from basketball shooting contests to yoga and Zumba lessons.
These events differ from traditional street festivals in that they foster a sense of community and place physical activity and healthier lifestyle choices at the forefront. Participants in the pilot SundayStreetsHTX initiative earlier this year indicated that as a result of their positive experience, they would be more likely to consider walking or biking to destinations within their neighborhoods. In addition, nearly all of the participants surveyed indicated that they planned to attend SundayStreetsHTX again.
In addition, the success of the program was measured by the increased economic activity in businesses on the route: nearly 70% of participants were introduced to businesses they did know beforehand and 60% indicated spending 10 dollars or more at the event. City officials will continue to work with community partners and leaders to ensure that Houstonians explore our city’s neighborhoods this fall in an enjoyable, engaging environment.
