This Week at City Hall

Sep. 20, 2013Office of Council Member Ellen Cohen

POWs Remembered at City Hall

Council Member Cohen presented a Mayoral Proclamation at a remembrance ceremony to honor and recognize all former American prisoners of war and those currently missing in action. This annual event was coordinated by the District 4 Veterans of Foreign Wars to increase public awareness and commitment to never forget the sacrifices of our armed forces.

On the Agenda

A public meeting date was set by Council to discuss a proposal recently submitted by The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH). To improve accessibility to their new exhibition building, which is adjacent to the Lillie and Roy Cullen Sculpture Garden, the MFAH has applied to the City for approval to construct an underground connector tunnel for pedestrians and vehicles. The easement for this tunnel would cross a portion of the Sculpture Garden, requiring a public hearing, though the proposed easement would not interfere with any Sculpture Garden grounds or activities. The hearing for discussion of this proposal has been set for Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at 9:00AM.

What’s Happening in the Annex

Council Member Cohen met with Jamie Brewster and Travis Younkin of the Upper Kirby District to discuss their ongoing improvement projects in District C. Portions of Westheimer St. are currently undergoing construction to include paving, drainage, and streetscape improvements. To receive updates on construction progress, street closures, and other news, citizens can sign up for the Upper Kirby newsletter.
