Dress for Success Houston is sending out an S.O.S. throughout our community asking women to donate their gently worn suits during this year’s Send One Suit (S.O.S.) Week. From March 5-9, this week-long series of fundraising events and suit drives appeals to Houstonians to help women tackling the job market so that they can progress on their path to self-sufficiency.

“This year we are all feeling the uncertainty and anxiety of tough economic times, and now more than ever our clients need help finding a job,” said Nancy Levicki, president and co-founder of Dress for Success Houston. “Imagine the life of a woman who spent the majority of her life on public assistance…who recently landed her first job through hard work and determination…who finally earns just enough money each month for rent and food for her children…and then loses that precious job and its promise of self-sufficiency. These are the women who come through the doors of Dress for Success Houston for help. This year alone, we hope to be able to serve more than 5,000 women.”

Presented by Chevron for the seventh year, S.O.S. Week brings in more than 70% of Dress for Success Houston’s annual inventory. In 2011, generous Houstonians donated more than 23,000 items during S.O.S. Week, which helped the more than 4,800 Houston area women that came through the doors of the agency. This year, Dress for Success Houston anticipates serving an ever increasing number of job ready women, some entering the job market for the first time, others hoping to re-enter the workplace.

Donations should include gently worn business suits, clean and on hangers, shoes and handbags. We suit women of all sizes, however our greatest needs are suit sizes 14-36 and shoe sizes 9 and up. Drop-off locations include all Houston area MW Cleaners and the Dress for Success Houston office located at 3915 Dacoma, Suite A, Houston, TX, 77092. In addition, monetary donations are accepted. In fact, $75 will cover the cost of one suit and accessories for a Houston area women seeking self-sufficiency.

Houston City Council Members Ellen Cohen and James Rodriguez will co-host a press conference March 6 at 1 p.m. at the City Hall Rotunda to announce the kick-off of this year’s S.O.S. Week and to release a proclamation naming March 6, 2012, Dress for Success Houston Day.

“This is a very worthy cause that I am proud to participate in. The suit donations we make help women look and feel their best, and gain the confidence necessary to succeed,” Council Member Rodriguez stated.

“I previously had the opportunity to work with Dress for Success during my time as CEO of the Houston Area Women’s Center and I am pleased to support them once again,” stated Council Member Cohen. “Women feel confident to enter the workforce when they have the appropriate business attire so I’m thrilled to help bring awareness to this admirable organization.”

Presenting Sponsor, Chevron, will be joined by more than 100 companies and organizations hosting suit drives during S.O.S. Week. Companies in Houston also have the opportunity to participate as “Clean Sweep” sponsors by supporting the event with a financial contribution of $5,000 or more. This year’s local “Clean Sweeps” include:
