At their final meeting for the year, the Harris County Medical Society (HCMS) Central Branch recognized State Rep. Ellen Cohen as a 2009 Texas Legislative Session Patient Care Champion.
Gathering at Trevisio in the Texas Medical Center, the group honored representatives who went to Austin to “fight for our patients and our profession,” said Dr. Frank Redmond, president of the branch.
Dr. Patrick Carter, member of the HCMS Board on Medical Legislation, presented the plaque to Rep. Cohen and recounted her accomplishments during the 81st Legislative Session including her appointments to the Appropriations and Higher Education committees. He cited her as the coauthor of the bill providing tax relief to many small businesses and as a fighter for an increase to Medicaid, CHIP, and mental health funding.
“Finally, Rep. Cohen worked diligently with Rep. Craig Eiland and the Harris and Galveston County Medical Societies to provide the funding to rebuild UTMB in the wake of Hurricane Ike and to bring much needed relief to the trauma centers here in Houston. For all these reasons, State Rep. Ellen Cohen is a valued Patient Care Champion,” noted Dr. Carter.
Rep. Cohen represents District 134, which includes all of Bellaire, West University, River Oaks, Rice University and the Texas Medical Center, along with parts of Meyerland and Montrose.
