State Representative Ellen Cohen presented the Memorial Park Conservancy a charitable gift of $1000 during the National Trails Day celebration on Saturday, June 6, at Memorial Park. The donation was made possible through an award won by Representative Cohen and her staff’s participation in the Lone Star Step Challenge sponsored by Virgin Health Miles.
The challenge promised to award $1000 to the charity of choice for the state representative’s office that accumulated the most walking steps throughout the contest timeline. Representative Cohen’s office won the contest by completing 112,050 walking steps per team member.
Representative Cohen and her staff chose the Memorial Park Conservancy because the nonprofit is in District 134 and engages in an array of activities to preserve the park’s natural environment while promoting enjoyment of Memorial Park by the public. “Memorial Park Conservancy was the clear choice; not only will the donation benefit a wonderful organization, but it will also help to preserve a park that is heavily used by constituents and is a valued resource for our district and the City of Houston,” said Representative Cohen.
The National Trails Day event was one of many to celebrate the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps’s (NCCC) 15th anniversary. Memorial Park Conservancy, a nonprofit organization that aids Houston Parks & Recreation Department, teamed together with AmeriCorps NCCC and Becks Prime to sponsor the event.
